UT Austin Organizations

Stick Around and Join a Club!

Since we couldn't bring them to you at our annual in-person Adelante, we will introduce you to amazing organizations at UT Austin virtually!

Our events in our 'Events' tab will allow you to have access to our exclusive dates set up for UT students to meet others at UT that are Latinx.

This is not an exhaustive documentation of organizations on campus. These are organizations that we have reached out to and they are excited to connect with incoming and current Latinx students! For more organizations, Hornslink is a great website to check out additional organizations.

Mission Statement:

  • CASA's mission is to support students of Central American descent and interested others during their time on the Forty Acres. CASA is an inclusive space for advancing the Central American narrative throughout campus and our communities. We are a social and educational organization that inspires personal development through service, activism, and exploring Central American heritage.

Platform Information:

  • Twitter, Instagram - @casautexas

Member Requirements:

  • No requirements! We are open to anyone and everyone who is interested in learning more about Central American culture and heritage as well as connecting with other Central Americans at UT

Meetings/Events:

  • General meetings, socials, fundraisers, community service opportunities, book club

Most Successful Program:

  • Our monthly food workshops!! Here, we introduce our members to some of the traditional foods across Central American and teach them how to make it themselves! This program, along with the others, has helped develop a deeper sense of Central American pride in our members while creating a much needed community within the Latinx population at UT

You Should Know:

  • We want all students at UT who share a Central American identity to know that they are not alone, we are here to support them anyway we can. Also, we believe that the topic of anti-racism and inclusion remain super important to the advancement and peace of our communities so we are doing everything we can to keep these conversations going and push for much needed change within the Latinx population and UT.

Keep Up-To-Date:

  • We send out weekly newsletters and keep our social media up to date with information about upcoming events

Benefits:

  • We invite speakers from different career fields to speak on their work within the Central American community to help better educate and motivate our members. We also host a lot of fun activities such as socials and food workshops to help students find their community here at UT :)

How to get involved:

  • Just follow us on our social media and come out to our events!! There are no membership fees :)

Culture:

  • We do whatever we can to create a very fun and welcoming environment for students. While most of our members share a Central American identity, we go beyond that to create an inclusive community for our members through our various programs - general meetings, socials, community service activities, and more

Information Sessions/Recruitment Events:

  • Our general meetings are held every other Wednesday at 6 PM, starting September 9. We also have a LinkTree with links to our GroupMe (our main form of communication) and all of our social media (https://linktr.ee/casautexas)

Gender and Sexuality Center

Years Active at UT: 15 years

Mission Statement:

  • The mission of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is to provide opportunities for all members of the UT Austin community to explore, organize, and promote learning around issues of gender and sexuality. The center also facilitates a greater responsiveness to the needs of women and the LGBTQIA+ communities through education, outreach, and advocacy.

Platform Information:

Executive Board:

  • Director - Liz Elsen

  • Assistant Director - Quynh-Huong Nguyen

Meetings/Events:

  • weekly events, non-weekly events (ex: our semesterly Gender Inclusive Clothing + Stuff Swap, Lavender Graduation), outreach events, trainings & workshops, Peers for Pride (a for-credit academic class), drop-in advising, mentorship program

Most Successful Program:

  • Our most successful program is likely Lavender Graduation because we get to celebrate LGBTQIA+ graduates. Best example: more students feel comfortable being themselves once they find community at the GSC.

Specialty:

  • We are both a Women's Center and LGBTQIA+ Center. We have feminist, queer, and trans events, trainings & workshops.

Keep Up-To-Date:

Collaborations:

  • We regularly collaborate with campus departments, centers, offices, and student groups. We also regularly collaborate with individual community members and community organizations.

Benefits:

  • We provide multiple services to students -- such as our events, outreach, trainings, workshops, drop-in advising, library, mentorship program, and our Peers for Pride class.

How to get involved:

  • Multiple ways!

  • 1. Join our mentorship program. This program connects first year and transfer LGBTQIA+ and Women & Feminist students with University of Texas faculty and staff. Through the program, students gain the support and validation of faculty and staff. The formal mentor-mentee relationship lasts one academic year; however, many mentors and mentees maintain contact with one another well past the one-year mark. To apply to be a mentee, fill out this application: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfqoXJAyIbExLdX_NZA_RUEkQ-L5HhWD7kxQwgxXtcBtLoVGQ/viewform

  • 2. Come to events. They are regularly posted on our instagram, newsletter, facebook, twitter, and website calendar.

  • 3. Attend a workshop or training. They are regularly posted on our instagram, newsletter, facebook, twitter, and website calendar.

  • 4. Take our class, Peers for Pride! There are no prerequisites, and it counts in womens and gender studies, social work, and theatre/dance.

Culture:

  • The GSC is known for being affirming, brave, informational, and fun. We have an event going on (literally) every week, and it's a good place to find a community that affirms women/LGBTQIA+ identities and folks that live within intersections of those.

Adapting to Virtual UT:

  • During Fall 2020, all programs, outreach, trainings, workshops, drop-in advising, and our Peers for Pride class will be virtual. Resources & library books will be available for pickup from the GSC (WCP 2.112) once a week by appointment only. Email gsc@austin.utexas.edu to schedule an appointment.
